Baby Modeling: Good Choice for Your Baby, or Bad Choice?

by Erin Petersville

Any good parent worth their salt in parentdom, upon hearing from those around them how cute and adorable their baby is, will undoubtedly head to the nearest modeling agency and sign their cute little bundle of joy up into a lucrative career in baby modeling. But is this the right thing to do? There are several things to consider before jumping into this pool filled with piranhas and sharks.

If, after all the warnings about baby modeling, you are set on taking this path, then the first place to start is to get a bunch of your baby’s pictures, which I know you have, in all your scrapbooks and photo albums, and head to the nearest free contests, either in person or online. Entering these free contests will get your baby noticed by all the right pairs of eyes. Some would say it would be easier just to submit to modeling agencies directly, but I say it is much more fun, exciting and rewarding to enter these free contests online, especially if your cute little dumpling wins!

Also, there is the opportunity to place your beautiful baby in traditional beauty pageants that are held throughout the year. This is also a great opportunity for you baby to get noticed, as most pageants’ sponsors are the very people who you want your child to be noticed by.

The best reason for entering online photography contests is this: should your baby win, there his or her photo will remain for all the world to see, especially the top brass of the modeling agencies, who patrol these very sites looking for the next great baby model. And who should they find? The more contests you enter, the more exposure and the greater the chance of getting noticed. Baby modeling contract…in the bag.

What about those cutest baby contests? The name says it all. These contests are executive magnets. What modeling executive wouldn’t pay attention to cutest baby contests? If your baby wins or, heaven forbid, just place, in one of these contests, you can be sure that modeling agency executives are just around the corner, looking at all your cutest baby has to offer their clients. A good exposure event.

All this aside, I want you to pay close attention to the following. Oftentimes, parents are caught up in the starstruck lifestyle, wanting to live it by proxy through their baby. But, please, consider what you are getting you and your baby into before you leap willy-nilly into the fray. One thing to look at is how is your baby’s general disposition in life? I mean, do you have a baby who is happy most of the time, smiling and laughing at everything? This would be a good thing, because modeling agency bigwigs do not hire grumpy babies who are hard to get along with others. Bad for business.

Then, look at yourself. What kind of parent are you? I don’t mean, do you care for your baby, treating them well, feeding and clothing them, etc. No, I mean are you overbearing, and hard to work with? Because you will have to go along with your baby on his or her modeling journey. If you are not pleasant to work with, chances are, your baby will not be getting any modeling jobs any time soon.

Other than the above considerations, which should be warning enough, is to watch out for snake oil salesmen, those agencies who promise you and your baby the world on a silver platter…as long as you pay them up front. Bad idea. Reputable agencies get paid to get modeling jobs for your child. Not to consider thinking about maybe getting your baby modeling jobs, but maybe you should find the auditions yourself. These snake oil salesmen are out there unfortunately, so be warned and be on the lookout. Above all, care for your baby and enjoy the adventure, however long it lasts.
