Everyone has seen the beautiful and exotic costumes that belly dancers wear. This is the image that Hollywood and other forms of entertainment have given us as authentic belly dancing costumes. But do the costumes we typically see vary from the traditional costume worn by belly dancers?

The costumes that we see today are not authentic versions of traditional belly dancing costumes. These costumes were copied by the Egyptian dancers based on what they saw in the Hollywood images of the 30’s and 40’s. These costumes have become so ingrained in society as authentic that we don’t really know what a traditional costume looks like anymore.

Egyptian Dance

The dancer in a fully beaded dress performs dances called baladi. These are usually only found in folk dances and not the usual belly dance routines of today. You will find that western dancers will use these costumes for when they perform traditional folk dances but will also wear them for more current dances as well.

Turkish Dress

The belly dancing costumes worn in Turkey are considerably more revealing than those that are worn in Egypt. The skirts worn by Turkish women will usually have a very high slit that exposes the entire leg of the dancer. Belts are used to accentuate the body and movements of the dancer. This costume is very appealing to people watching the performance. Veils are not usually worn with these costumes. The use of a veil is a completely western addition.

Other African art and craft include the old African tradition basket. Esths and Gumare tribes of Botswana are the two places which is famous for African baskets. These baskets were usually carried over the head, but as the culture grew, they modified the baskets and were carried on the shoulders. As a result hand bags came in to existence and they were made with some of the artistic work of African culture. And they used some of the rare materials like mud cloth and suede to manufacture bags. Even today there is a great demand of African arts among the people around the world. Africa has a great name on its culture and tradition.

Restaurants that feature belly dancing for entertainment are springing up all over Europe, America and Asia. Usually these restaurants are Middle Eastern. There is generally a special time for the belly dancing show.

Simply call ahead and find out when the show is scheduled to begin so you can be sure to get a good seat. It is also possible to plan a special event at the restaurant and hire the belly dancers for entertainment.

The Music

Your dress needs to be formal but it does not need to be like an evening dress embellished with beads, sequins, bows or feathers. These could come in the way of your moves and could be uncomfortable. The dress should be formal and fashionable without being too ornate or causing discomfort in any way.

Now the shoes are important too. So you should choose carefully. The choice will depend on the kind of dance you are thinking of performing. There are shoes made especially for the jive, the swing and for the more formal dances. So you need to know what exactly to buy.

Ballroom dancing shoes need to be light so that you can move easily. If the shoes are heavy, you could end up with sore feet not to mention the fact that you can’t move very easily on the dance floor. Take a good look at the height of the shoes as well. For men, it should not be over an inch and a half and for women, three inches.

Don’t choose your shoes for the way they look but the way they feel. Sure, you need them to look good but they need to be comfortable to help you dance your best. You’ll find that a lot of shoes for dancing have an open-toed style but you might just be more comfortable in a closed shoe style.

Then, even if you get stepped on, it isn’t too bad. You can also get insoles just in case you find the high heels a bit uncomfortable. Ill-fitting shoes can be the cause of a lot of aches and pains so choose wisely and well. Make sure the shoes are elegant and simple without embellishments that can cause soreness or blisters.

It helps to choose a good brand as well as most of them are made to make feet feel good. Spending a bit more on good shoes will be well worth it. Ballroom dancing means clothes and shoes that not only look good but are comfortable too.
