Money is the number one thing that married couples fight about. But do you realize that the tension surrounding money begins long before the happy couple say ‘I do?’ Wedding costs can rapidly escalate out of control which is why it’s so important to begin the planning by devising a realistic budget. And once you’ve got the numbers crunched, it’s equally important that you both stick to the budget.

Though budgeting expenses isn’t very exciting, it can be a good thing. After all, without a budget it will be likely that the wedding expenses will land a couple into serious financial debt. What is best way to to create a successful budget? Open, two-way communication is a must to succeed, as it will continue to be throughout the marriage.

Newly-engaged couples must talk about how each envisions his and her special day. Women work on the assumption that guys don’t care about the details but that’s not always true. It is, after all, the man’s big day, too and he has a family to please as well.

Getting angry or disappointed in the amounts you are being given isn’t a very mature way of handling the situation.

Once you have listed what money you have and what is expected, you will know what you have to spend. Now draw up a list of all elements to potentially be included in the wedding each with dollar amounts or the percentage of the budget you are willing to spend. This will be a guide when contracting each service. Of course, if you happen to exceed the limit in any category, the difference must come out of another category in order for the budget to stay balanced. Use the tools that work for you including worksheets or software, whatever it takes to keep it all organized!

MASH was a classic game when I was a kid. We’d sit and play it anytime we were supposed to sit quietly. The best part was always discovering who you were destined to marry. The next best part was always discovering if you were going to live in a Mansion, and Apartment, A Shack or A House (MASH).

But right up there at the top of the list of fun MASH divinations was what car I would be driving once I was all “grown up.” I had no idea what kind of car I might like to drive (I was only 8, maybe 9) but I gave it my best shot when I was asked to create the initial list. It usually looked something like this:

I know, I know. Feel free to make fun. It’s a ridiculous list, but I was just a child and laughing too hard would be mean. So you should probably stop now. Since then (and I won’t tell you exactly how long it’s been “since then”) I’ve gotten a bit better at identifying what I like and what I don’t like when it comes to the cars that I drive. And I also wonder why my small, young self had never heard of the Hyundai! They’ve got such a great lineup. The Accent is perfect as a first vehicle with its affordable price. The Elantra is an environmentally friendly car and also offers more room than its closest competition.

The Sonata is the next step up from the Elantra and is even classified as a “large car” through the EPA classification system. It’s got a lot of really great safety features that come standard. The Hyundai Azera received the JD Power & Assoc. APEAL study recognition twice. The Tucson has a great crossover combination of car and SUV. The Santa Fe and the Entourage are both “Top Safety Picks” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Veracruz has the Hideaway seat offering a third row. And we can’t forget the Tiburon that is just plain eye catching with the sport tuned suspension to support the sporty look!

So…if any of you feel like playing MASH I’d like to venture out a little bit with my list of vehicles. I don’t want a slug bug, my husband has a truck and I don’t need the BMW (it’s just for the name anyway). But…I may leave the Ferrari on there just for kicks!

Just like that I saved myself a ton of money! The costs for a graphic designer were gone and when I was first starting out I used this strategy a lot because I simply didn’t have the money to put down for elements like that.

Some people tell me, “Yeah, but Stu, you’re giving away 50% of the profits. That’s a big chunk of money.” Well, time out for a second. I’m of the viewpoint that it’s better to get your projects completed and making some money versus keeping all of nothing and not getting anything completed.

If I didn’t create that type of relationship with this specific vendor, I would never have completed those projects and would therefore wouldn’t have made any money. Those ideas would have been sitting up on a shelf, not making me anything.

Whether you are just starting out, on a tight budget, or just want to get projects done economically, you really have to look to be creative. Joint venture project with my vendors is one creative idea I’ve used with multiple different vendors.

Another tip to save money that I have learned over the course of using vendors is to have as much work done ahead of time. By doing this you are cutting down on the time and effort your vendor needs to use on your project. You can even ask your vendor questions, like, how could you decrease they’re effort, reduce your overall costs, etc. Vendors will answer these for you, they want to work with you. Everyone has a budget to work within and vendors will be willing to help you stay within it, they are always interested in your business and will help you meet your goals.

Here is another tip – create a template instead of just a project. This way you can use it more than once, without having to pay for the same thing twice. I’ll go into more detail to explain it better.

We’ll use an e-Book as an example. Instead of getting your graphic designer to design a specific layout for your one e-Book, why don’t you just get them to design a template you can use to every other e-Book you develop?

This is a different way about going things – the thing is you will save tons of money – thousands – in the long-run. As for the graphic designer its about the same amount of effort for them to put forth. This is just another idea about how you can again build your relationships with your vendors, but also save a lot of money.
