Through sports kids learn to share with others, the power of team work and positive competition can be fostered in the muddy soccer and hockey fields that the classroom can only fantasize about. Through competitive games and sports kids can learn what it takes to win and how to deal with unexpected outcomes in life. The beauty of sports is that through its many intense activity, interaction among kids themselves and also with adults is essential.

Kids can learn how to express themselves and respect authority, traits that can be hard to develop in adults. Starting them on such at a young age will reap fruits that will be the pride of all.

Tom Hanks is an remarkable talent. It is rather outrageous that he got his start in a goofy TV show called “Bosom Buddies”. While the tabloid press seems to take his personal life and overshadow his movie roles, what is the most commendable thing about Brad Pitt is his pledge to humanitarian causes throughout the world. He continuously donates large sums of his wealth to help people that are less fortunate.

After Hurricane Katrina basically wiped out New Orleans, Brad Pitt started the “Make It Right Foundation” to aid in the redevelopment of the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans. The foundation builds homes that are affordable, sustainable and true to the diverse culture of New Orleans. The goal was to accomplish the building of the homes immediately so that the residents could return home as soon as possible. That has been his true success.

Which reminds me of one more great actor who we lost just this past year. Paul Newman passed away on September 26, 2008. All through his life he entertained us with countless great movies including the “Road to Perdition” in 2002, “The Color Of Money” from 1986 and “Absence of Malice” from 1981. He also had the leading role in the well-known favorite “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” from clear back in 1969. Certainly, he was also in many other wonderful movies, too.

But we also remember him for his charity. In 1982 he created a line of food products called “Newman’s Own”.
