Hunting Scopes and their many Features

by Alberto Kessnerr

One of the most important parts in hitting your target every time is quality-hunting scopes. Each year, technology advances are made in designing rifle scopes with more accuracy. Follow these guidelines to stay current on all the latest features to purchase the exact scope you were aiming for.

The Basics

Ask yourself these three questions to determine which model of rifle scope is best for you:

Your style of shooting

Type of firearm

Options you prefer

An important thing to remember is that a longer lens means a more powerful scope. More lenses within the scope increase magnification by bending light rays through the lenses. In contrast, a short rifle scope contains smaller lenses, and proportionately lowers magnifying power.

Multicoated lenses can increase the scope’s clarity in conditions where there is little light. This can help you more accurately view game during hunts in the early dawn or late evening. This is, of course, the main goal of buying hunting scopes.

The Benefits

Magnification– For hunters who hunt in thick woods or relatively close quarters, a fixed magnification scope is a good choice. Under those hunting conditions, a 15-power scope is enough as any shot is bound to be in range.

If you take short shots averaging 75 yards or less, a 4X scope should work just fine. On the other hand, if you want to be able to take longer and more difficult shots, consider a variable range magnification scope. The most popular of these models has a flexible range of 3X to 9X, for shots of less than 50 yards on up to 200 yards.

Higher power scopes to shoot game at distances of 500 yards or over are available.

Ready, Aim, Fire– Hunting scopes are there to enhance your ability to shoot exactly what you sight in. There are wide ranges of options that offer superior optical performance. Objective lens rifle scopes can be purchased equipped resistant to shock, water, and fog.

Adjustment– Another important factor to consider before you buy hunting scopes is adjustment. You should always stick with scopes that are adjustable for wind and elevation. Make sure that the adjustments have enough detail for your needs.

There are numerous styles of hunting scopes including sniper, spotting, night vision ,and sighting, in addition to pistol, military, and tactical.

Reticles– A reticle, known as the crosshairs, is the image that helps shooters take accurate aim when aligning their shot. To help your decision on which reticle to choose: what type of game are you hunting, what conditions do you face, and last but not least, what is your personal preference.

Bushnell, Nikon, and Leupold are several of the most popular brands of hunting scopes. There are many options for reticles, including multi-shot reticle. For example, Leupold has series scopes that are available in 7 different reticles.

There are reticles designed to help the long-range shooter. The varmint reticle provides five aiming points, to tailor make the scope to a particular load, rifle, and compensate for wind. You can sight the rifle in for distances from 500 to 100 yards.

With the great variety of hunting scopes on the market, you have no excuse for missing another shot. Utilize this information to help you determine which rifle scope model is best for you.
