Fremont Bull Riding Classics

by Mercie Hallow

Bull riding sport often leaves me in awe and in shock because of the bravery of the bull fighters. I have often see bull riding on the television and I can say that it always give me the chills to see these bull riders bodies literally being swayed by the bulls harsh and quick movements. That is the reason why I am very eager to attend one and see it for myself while I am here in Fremont, Nebraska. I am indeed excited and eager to attend this festival and I cant wait!

In bull riding, both the bull and the rider are given points which will account to the over-all point of the whole ride. The participant with the highest point wins the ride. Riders never get to choose their own bull. The bulls points are always based on its agility, performance and bucking stances. Bucking is the act where a bull is galloping on its hind legs to get rid of the rider from its back.

As part of the given rules in any bull riding competition, a rider should not touch himself, the rope, or the bull with his other hand. The rope is always coated with rosin, as well as the riders glove to prevent it from slipping. As safety measures, all riders are encouraged to come in the usual bull riding outfits. Apart from the gloves riders are expected to wear chaps as protective clothing for his legs and vest for his chest.

There had been heated arguments on the subject of bull riding and some animal welfare rights openly criticized the idea of it. They criticized the idea of hot shots or electric cattle prods that are being used to shock the bull into jumping out of the chute quickly as soon as it was released. Supporters say that these are ultimately safe for the animals as the shots are mildly given and could in any way pose a grave threat to an animals health because they possess thick hides.

Now Im definitely going to see the bull riding competition in Fremont. I want to be entertained and amused at the riders and the bulls.

Tasting Wine 4

by Ian Kleine

The type of glassware you use and the drink ware (or stemware for the complex drinker) often comes in different shapes and sizes. And there is a reason for it, it is because these and each of these wares are made for a specific variety of wine. The bulbs a

A rule for those who are just starting, red wines call for large, open glasses, and white wines call for smaller, flute-like glasses. Beginners can start with less expensive stemware for experimentation and trial purposes.

Pairing food with wine usually causes an increase, decrease, development or magnification of flavor between the food and the wine. Red wines go well with varied cheeses, chocolate of varying sweetness and bitterness, and most berries. White wines have a good combination with apples, pears and most citrus fruits.

Although the general rule of pairing red wine and red beef together, and white wine with white meat holds true, it is actually more complicated than at most. Drink with whatever you have in mind, and whatever tastes good for you. The reason of drinking wine is to be happy and be satisfied with the experience provided.

In essence, wine is there to be a complement for food, and to finish your meal altogether. Sweet wines don’t do the job well as they tend to make the drinker bloated, instead of complete. Wines that are recommended for the job are those that have high acidity (to help with the feeling of digesting the food), those with aromas (to relax the body and help with the “full” feeling), and those with a composed and complex bouquet (for helping with the flavor that is staying in the mouth). Some wines are said to be aphrodisiac in tone as well, so they make for good meal finishers but not as good companions when you want to sleep.

How to Taste Wine

by Ian Kleine

Wine testing is a very heavenly experience for those who glorify and for those who mine wine their life. However, it is not the simple matter of indulging your thirst and outright chugging the whole thing down like water. Wine should be treated like ambrosia: precious liquid that should be served and drunk sparingly and with utmost responsibility. Wine represents art, represents food and drink, represents happiness and culture. In short, wine represents the good things of life and possibly more.

There are a select number of ways to enjoy wine tasting and to get the best out of your money. But what are these steps? Try and follow these to make sure your wine tasting excursion doesn’t end up in a blunder or in a foul setting. Most wine newbies often leave and desist from taking on another wine excursion if they have had bad experiences with the first.

Firstly, observe the wine with a steady and sharp eye. Pour the wine into the glass and observe the coloration. Watch as it morphs and changes its intensity with every gentle swirl of your glass. Contrast the wine with the pure white color of a tablecloth, a napkin, or a piece of paper, to see the true essence of the wine.

Observe the lines and the patterns revolving around the glass. White wine becomes deeper, darker with age; while red wines soften, lose their sharp redness and turn a bit more brown. Sediments may develop over time, but these sediments are harmless, and if nothing more but simple nuisances. Swirling the wine could also help with catching preliminary odors that could be tell tale signs for spoiled, or re-corked wine.

You would know what re-corked wines would smell like especially after a good swirling. It has already lost its fruitiness, has an oxidized smell, and oftentimes, feels ‘rough’ to the tongue.

Barry Bonds Baseball

by Denise I Smithson

The success of Barry Bonds’ baseball career was really just the beginning of a story that may eventually overshadow his achievements. As an outfielder, Bonds racked up four MVP awards, each one of them in consecutive years. He was a player in the 2007 World Series, and has become one of the most well known baseball players of his time. In 2006, he was busy slugging homeruns and passed Ruth and Aaron to land in first place for the most homers of any ball player.

Sadly, there may be an asterisk next to all of these records. Bonds has admitted to steroid usage (although he denies having willingly or knowingly taken the drug), something which was long rumored. Bonds did not exactly have a rapport with the fans, despite his performance on the diamond. Many hated him and he gladly returned the favor. Bonds burned so many bridges that no team was willing to sign him on for the 2008 season (and he has no contracts lined up for the 2009 season at the time of this writing), despite his holding the record for career home runs at 762 and most home runs in a single season at 73.

With an accomplished career and his financial security already assured, Bonds became a target of investigation in connection to the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative case and was charged with perjury for having lied about his steroid use.

This has cast a pall over his entire career. Fans questioned the validity of his MVP awards and his achievements within the game – and the league itself has also expressed concern. Achievements which came through the use of steroids, the reasoning goes, are not to be valued as highly as those accomplished solely through an athlete’s natural faculties.

This overshadowed an impressive baseball career that started out in high school. As he was finishing his final term in high school, Bonds was approached by the Giants. As he finished his high school career, the negotiations between Bonds and the Giants were not going as well as projected, and college seemed like a better choice. He continued to play baseball in college and excelled during this time, including seven consecutive hits during the College World Series. He was then named the All American selection that year by Sporting News.

Barry Bonds is still facing obstruction of justice charges that will not be heard in court until March of 2009. The federal prosecutor had submitted paperwork with a typo, alleging that the steroid use, which Bonds still argues he did not take knowingly, was tested for, and found positive in 2001 rather than the year 2000. This year makes a difference due to testing laws that were not implemented until a later date.

Bonds has been spending his time away from the diamond by working with children’s hospitals, a public service which has comforted many sick and even terminally ill children. Bonds holds an honorary chairmanship from the Macy’s Tree Lighting committee – this committee raises money for UCSF Children’s Hospital Palliative Care Program, a children’s hospice.

Ghosts in Kansas

by Mercie Hallow

Ghosts are spirits of the dead which continue to haunt us still because of unfinished businesses. Ghosts are really scary; I mean who isnt scared of one? The mere idea of a ghost even if its a family member lurking beneath the walls of our house really gives me goose bumps all over. I just pray I wouldnt see one. My husband says Im a chicken and I shouldnt be afraid of ghosts in our house since they are just spirits of dead relatives. Oh, whatever.

Ghosts are very typical in houses, schools, hospitals and public building where once upon a time the place was busy with all activities. I dont for one, watch any ghost film for I will have a tough time sleeping after. Ghost tours are also off limits to me, unless I’m traveling with a group of people with my husband at my side. There is an interesting ghost tour in Kansas City that receives acclaims and positive (and also frightening) response coming from their client. This is the Ghost Tours of Kansas.

Kansas City is a place to many ghost places and buildings as it has a very rich (and gruesome) history to tell. The tour visits haunted cemeteries, high schools, museums, and other public places and offices where active ghosts reside. The tour guides are backed up by PEDRO or Paranormal Encounter Documentation & Research Organization which has a team of experts in locating ghosts. Scary!

There was this anecdote wherein a group of women visited a haunted cemetery. One member felt a touch on her back and when she no one, she claimed that it must have been a ghost that hit her. The tour guide/ PEDRO member told her that it was indeed the ghost of a little boy who happens to play among the location and was taken by her red hat.

The places the tour visits are really places where ghosts reside. Door knobs wobbling and pictures taken by the tourists with hazy shadows and ghostly silhouettes in it are evidences that spirits still thrive in these places.
