Disposable, Cloth, Or Hybrid Diapers For Your Affordable Diaper Bag?

by Kelly Williams

Diaper bags hold diapers. Sure they house many other accessories - but their main function is stated by their name. And a new generation of parents now have a new set of diaper choices. Environmental concerns have led more companies to design better diapers that reduce waste and provide healthier alternatives. The variety of diaper styles now basically revolve around three categories. Cloth diapers with new cloth diaper versions are one type. The old plastic disposables are a second type. And a third style are the new hybrids which combine an outer layer which is permanent along with a disposable inner layer.

I read a statistic recently that stated over 1% of all trash in landfills is disposable diapers. Is that something or what? Here are some other interesting facts to note: Over 27 BILLION disposables are used just in the US alone per year. According to Wikipedia, that translates to a possible 3.4 million tons of used diapers that go into landfills every year. Hmm. That’s not a pretty thought now is it.

It’s known that the plastics, sticky tabs and chemicals used in the disposables can irritate a baby and cause dizziness as well as the diaper pieces coming off and potentially put into a baby mouth as they move. So there are clearly multiple issues to think about for those who want to make an educated choice on these things used even more often than diaper bags. An absorbent in plastic diapers known as sodium polyacrylate doesn’t have the greatest safety record, so it’s good to be informed.

Plastic diapers typically have the best grades for absorbing wetness. But then again, if you’re changing cloth diapers regularly, you won’t have the child in a wet diaper for long anyway. As discussed, the other drawback from an environmental perspective is that a lot more detergent will be used. And thus more chemical waste into the environment. The cost factors for cloth and plastic are debatable but are roughly the same. It really depends on the individual situation.

Mail order companies can provide cloth diaper services as well. While there is a greater cost up front to purchase all the diapers you’ll need in a typical rotation of washing, the savings can be significant. Some statistics show that disposable diapers can cost over $2000 in some situations over the life of using them with a child. Cloth diapers can cost significantly less after the initial purchase of the set. New cloth diapers in a larger size will be needed at some point too. This will still be a reduced cost from 2-3 years of plastic diapers in nearly all cases.

Hybrid diapers come in a multitude of options as well. Companies like g diaper provide inner layer inserts which can be thrown away. They have a reusable outer layer which is secure and keeps leaks at bay as well. Other companies use various microfiber which can be washed. Seventh Generation has a diaper which is a throw away. However, it it marketed as having significantly less toxins and reduces waste. This is still a disposable diaper, but you’re getting some reduction in environmental waste. Not the optimum green choice, but still perhaps better than the stock plastic diaper.

The next time you refill your diaper bag, you’ll know the additional choices available in the diaper world. Technology has advanced even in the world of diapers. It’s a matter of deciding whether one wants convenience at a more expensive price for the planet and for your money. Or whether a little more time needs to be spent in washing diapers and having some cost savings in a little bit of time. There’s no need for one extreme or the other either. Many companies are providing a happy medium which gives benefits in savings and reduction of waste.

Family Tips - Selflessly Serving Your Family

by Mirca Bauer

When someone begins a family, they start to learn a lot about themselves and the world. Being a good family member requires absolute selflessness as you place the needs of your children and spouse ahead of your own. It is a painful transition for many, as evidenced by divorce rates, depression rates, and bolts in the night. But if you truly want the best for your family, you will learn to place your own needs to the side. There are many different ways that you can selflessly serve your family, and you should try to excel in all of them. When your kids grow up to be successful and healthy individuals, you will know that all of your effort was worth it.

First of all you need to recognize the idealistic differences between you and your spouse. Do you feel the need to have everything extremely clean all of the time while your spouse doesn?t mind living in a pigsty? That is fine. It may cause some of the trouble in your marriage, but you will eventually learn to deal with it. The best way to do it is to clean things up on your own, without grumbling or pointing out the faults of your spouse.

If he or she mentions it, just say something along the lines of ?oh, I just prefer it like this, don?t worry about it?. This kind of reaction from you will hopefully get your spouse to start keeping things tidy, the way you like them. If not, just continue to do it yourself without being bitter about it.

Next you need to give your spouse and your children the time that they deserve. It is cushy for a working adult to get caught up in a cycle of working and relaxing, without setting aside time for continual family time. Eat dinner with your family and force interactions, even if you are not feeling up to it. Sometimes it takes a lot of willpower to forget the stresses of work and to simply enjoy the presence of your kids. But once you get used to doing it, you will start to enjoy it more and more and your kids will certainly be better off since you are interactive and involved.

You should also try to create a good attitude in your children. Teach them your own ideals. If you selflessly clean up after your spouse, teach your children that this is the way to maintain a good relationship. Teach them that sacrifice is important. By spending this time and effort to cultivate the personalities of your children, you are improving their futures and most likely creating a smoother family life for the short term. There are no ways that a good personality can create family problems, so do your best to teach your children to be agreeable and pleasant.

It can be hard to focus on all of the different points of family life at the same time. But just take things one day at a time, and one step at a time. Starting today, spend a few hours with your family, chatting and getting to know each other better. When you grow old and you look back on your memories with your family, you will be full of pleasant memories and you will have no regrets.

Babysitter Wanted: What You Should Do

by Rashel Dan

Is it feasible to put up a babysitter wanted sign if you need sitting services? You may think from then on that everything will move on smoothly. The truth is that looking for a sitter and hiring one can be stressful and time consuming. It is even more so if you do not know where to start. Here’s what you should do when you need to hire a sitter.

Start the Search

Begin somewhere. There are a couple of sources that could offer you some good babysitter prospects. You could ask for a recommendation from your friends or neighbors. You could also contact newspaper ad posters or post an ad of your own.

Babysitter Agency - Another option would be to look for a babysitter in an agency or in a sitter service. These days, agencies and services are easier to access because of the internet. Some online services are now quite cheap and very efficient in providing you with good help.

Find Out How Much

Consider the cost. Once you find some prospects, you have to find out how much they are worth. Determining a sitter’s rate is not as easy as consulting the average rates in your area. The rate of your sitter would have to depend on the specific situation. You would, for example, definitely have to pay a high rate for sitters with a lot of experience. Higher rates can also be given to those who are expected to work late, watch over a lot of children and perform tasks other than child minding.

Research on Background

Your search doesn’t end there. Your efforts don’t end when you take down the babysitter wanted sign. As soon as you find a babysitter, you have to make sure that she is absolutely the right person for the job. You have to be extra sure because you are putting the lives and safety of your kids on her hands. It would therefore be best if you interviewed your sitter extensively first. Ask her for details of her experience and if she is used to handling kids with the same ages as yours. Dig into her references too.

Chat with Your Sitter

House Rules - If your sitter checks out okay, then you have to discuss house and sitting rules. This is important because you want your sitter’s rules to be consistent with yours. You would also want to make the experience of minding your kids as easy for your sitter as possible. The best way to do this is to give her in advance the set of house rules that you would want her to follow when minding your kids. This will give her clear guidelines to follow pertaining to bed time, meal time and dealing with bad behavior.

Find Out If Kids and Sitters Match

Find out if kids and sitter match. It would be a good idea to have a first session trial. Have your sitter mind your kids for a few hours. After the initial session, ask both your sitter and your kids how everything went. It would be best to speak to them separately so that both parties would be comfortable telling you honestly about the experience.

We seem to be losing an essential skill in our society. Cooking. Real homemade cooking. The sort of cooking that Grandma used to cook for you. It’s important to teach cooking skills to kids, especially now when it seems so rare that kids are taught to cook. And the best place to start is homemade candy.

Last night I did some great cooking with my kids who are 8 and 11, and I can’t still see their faces as they licked out the bowl. Kids love cooking something that is easy to cook and yummy to eat. Homemade candy is both easy to cook and yummy to eat.

And if they learn to love cooking they’ll have a skill they’ll appreciate for the rest of their lives. And they graduate from cooking candy pretty fast.

Remember some basic rules. There is always mess and it always takes longer than you’d expect, at least at the start. Start the kids on a simple candy recipe. There are some wonderful simple homemade candy recipes that are simple for kids to cook. Start them on the easiest bit of the recipe.

And of course you’ve got to keep them away from heat, so avoid candy, for example, that requires a syrup. Syrup is heated to a high temperature so kids shouldn’t be stirring it, for example. No syrup burns.

And there’s just some stunning wonderful homemade candy recipes for kids too. I’ve mentioned syrup, it’s also a little difficult to do too, as you have to get the temparature just right, so steer clear of syrup and start with some of the more basic homemade candy recipes like truffles or pralines.

But once you’ve got the kids cooking confidently there’s no end to the wonderful candy recipes you can try. I love toffees, especially chewy toffee variety. Nougat is wonderful as are truffles, there’s so many.

Now all that has made me hungry.

Seriously though, teaching the kids to cook candy gets them on the road to cooking for life, and they learn to love to cook anything with time.

So grab some great homemade candy recipes, there’s lots on my website. And it’s cheaper and makes better candy than the store bought candy. Get the kids involved, they’ll thank you for it when they get older.

The Importance of Fostering Creativity When Learning Dance

by Sarah Wilkiamson

Dance is a very creative form of art. When looking for a dance school for your child you should choose a dance school that encourages creativity. When a student is passionate about dancing they can be creative and it will make them a great performer.

A child sometimes uses dancing as a way of expressing themselves and they need a school that helps them to be creative. This is an art form that is in itself a creative form of art.

There are many ways that a teaching organization can promote creativity:

Games: The teacher can create a lesson that would make students enjoy dancing. Games can often make dancing very enjoyable and at the same time the students will learn something from it. Students would look forward to lessons when they include games and enjoy learning many new skills.

Competitions: a little competition is good because it gives the students an incentive to learn more and perfect their skills. This needs to be low keyed with an element of fun mixed into the competition. It is up to the creativity of the teacher to make sure that this does not stress the young students and everybody is a winner.

Acting: acting in the form of mime is an integral part of dance. In fact mime is how a dance can tell a story or show emotion. Mime is a special form of acting that young children especially enjoy. When they learn how to do this they will bring out creativity in their dancing.

Motivation: learning this way is a strong way to motivate the students and keep them on task. Sometimes small children need motivation and incentives to keep focused and on task. This helps them to learn more at a faster rate.

Concentration: young children can have a short span in concentration and that’s why they need different learning methods to keep them focused. Concentration is important to help them to learn and remember what they have learned.

Stopping boredom: Another problem with younger students is that they are easily bored. Bringing a good selection of different ways to learn will prevent this from happening and result in them learning more. When their interest is kept alive they will look forward to their dance lessons.

To ensure that this creativity is part of the dance school curriculum it is good to meet the teachers of any dance school that you are proposing to send your child to.
